On Saturday February 28th, 2009, Hellenic College welcomed over thirty Boston-area Orthodox college students for the St. Photios the Great Faith & Learning Symposium, which provides Orthodox Christian college students the space to reflect on the relationship between their faith and their lives as college students. This year, there were student participants from Boston University, Hellenic College, Tufts University, University of Connecticut, College of the Holy Cross, Lehman College, Brandeis University, and Holy Cross School of Theology.
Fr. Brendan Pelphrey, pastor of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Shreveport, Louisiana, delivered the keynote address on the topic of Apologia: Explaining the Faith. Referencing the address, one participant stated, "I have learned some of the most important aspects of starting and maintaining religious dialogue without creating conflict."
Student-led small group discussions followed the morning's keynote and centered around the themes of "Christ in the Classroom," "Orthodox Worldview," and "Interfaith Relations." The day concluded with a reflective and informative group discussion with Fr. Brendan and all participants, which, according to one student, "answered a lot of questions" regarding Orthodoxy and apologetics.
