Summer Institute 2009 is a success!
Department of Religious Education and National Forum of Church Musicians Focus on Teaching the Faith and Involving Young People in Music.
Seventy five participants from every corner of the Archdiocese attended the 2009 Summer Institute held by the Department of Religious Education and the National Forum of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians on the campus of Hellenic College and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology.
Over three days and two nights, experts and specialists led workshops and presentations on teaching the Orthodox Faith and involving young people in Church music programs. All the participants enjoyed hearing the presentation "Living in the Logosphere" by His Grace Bishop Savas of Troas, Director of the newly re-established Office of Church, Society and Culture. Presvytera Georget Photos led a workshop on arts and crafts, also showing many of the projects she has created in her parish. Presvytera Laura Morton and Honda Webb walked participants through the steps to create a Vacation Church School. Theo Nicolakis led discussions on issues related to teenagers and the internet. Dr. Anton Vrame led a discussion on the role of teachers. Sessions were also dedicated to theological education, with a session on Byzantine liturgy by the Rev. Dr. Philip Zymaris and the Desert Fathers by Prof. Bradley Nassif. The Church Musicians focused on Youth Music Programs, specifically ways to involve more young people with Church music. Dr. Vicki Pappas, Evey Simon, Chrysanthy Therianos and Joanne Kambouris led these sessions.
Traditionally, the Summer Institute is held biennially, but the Department of Religious Education is exploring the possibility of holding a program for Sunday Church school teachers and youth workers at the 2010 Clergy-Laity Congress in Atlanta.
