Dr. Michopoulos Keynote Speaker
Dr. Aristotle Michopoulos, Professor and Chairman of the Greek Studies Department was the keynote speaker at the Battle of Crete Symposium sponsored by the Pan-Cretan Association, which took place at the Maliotis Cultural Center on the campus of Hellenic College and Holy Cross. Dr. Michopoulos touched on all the significant points in this major event of the Second World War during his address, especially how the Batle of Crete caused Nazi Germany to delay the start of Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of Russia, to such an extent that the invasion failed. Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of England at the time, remarked that after the Battle of Crete it must be said not that the Greeks fought like heroes, but that in the future it would be said that heroes fight like Greeks. Dr. Lily Macrakis read a paper prepared by George Blytas, George Geraniotis gave a first hand account of events and Mr. Simon Leering, the New Zealand Honorary Consul spoke about his countrymen' contribution.
