Each year, the Orthodox Christian Fellowship sponsors a program called "Real Break" for Orthodox college students. The program sends students from various schools to different parts of the world to work with Orthodox people in need. The name of the program points out that what the students do is a "real" committment, a "real" use of Spring break, an expression of Orthodox philanthropy, instead of just going to a warm and sunny locale.
This Saturday, March 19, ten Hellenic College students will depart for Guatemala where they will spend a week living and working at an Orthodox orphanage in Guatemala City. The orphanage, Hogar Rafael Ayau, is under the auspices of the Antiochian Orthodox Church of Guatemala and is staffed by Orthodox nuns. There are approximately 100 orphans there. They will work with the children in various capacities, playing with infants and toddlers, crafts, reading, teaching and sports as well as do needed work such as cleaning, painting, organizing and landscaping. The students are Hellenic College senior Katerina Giovos, juniors Nicholas Savas and John Dalber, sophomores Hannah Pappas, Marcella Xyloportas and Minas Gregoriades, and freshmen Anna Efthimiadis, Erin Hunt, Sebastian Mot and Seraphim Ramos. Advisors accompanying the group will be Father Peter Chamberas, Chaplain of Hellenic College and Holy Cross, and Alexia Chamberas.
Hopefully, the students will have internet access to send back reports as the week progresses, which will be posted on this website. Each of these students had to raise the necessary funds for the trip, which only adds to the commitment necessary for such an effort.
The enitre HCHC community is sharing in this trip by helping the orphanage meet their needs. This past Sunday a collection was taken up at the Chapel and four hundred dollars was raised that will be given to the orphanage. The HCHC community prays they have a safe and edifying trip.
